Week 16: Beginning of Microcopy & UI challenges

Updated: Mar 23, 2022

In this week's sprint, we were aiming to complete two user flows; one flow is focused on sending a gesture to the partner and the second flow is focused on the 'Thinking of you' feature.

We also decided to examine our first microcopy AB test of the 'Thinking of you' button, to determine which phrase works best for our users. So far, our copywriting has been too straightforward: 'Thinking of you'. We wanted to try a more sophisticated (but playful) approach, so we have changed the Copyright to an implicit meaning which reflects what the partner will see on his/her screen at the end of the process (winking avatar of the partner). We tested two terms: ‘Wink Neta' (if Itay is the one who sends the attribute) or ׳Ping Neta'. Here you can see both versions:

Moreover, we updated the homepage once more and made minor modifications to the 'Create a Gesti' section based on our ongoing market research, as you can see above.

Over the weekend, we tested the screens on users to see how they interact with them and to learn if the iteration helps to clarify the meaning of the buttons in particular and the whole feature in general.

We conducted 5 user tastings. 2 got the ‘Wink Neta' version and the other 3 got the ‘Ping Neta'.

The most frequent feedbacks were:

  • The gesture (Gesti) cannot be transmitted immediately, only by location & time. We should add an immediate option.

  • The scheduled gestures at the bottom of the page were interpreted by some of the users as reminders and not as future gestures.

  • Users prefer ‘Wink’ rather than ‘Ping’ because it’s less official and clarifies the message of the ‘Thinking of you’ attribute.

Another important issue we want to share with you is the meeting we had on Sunday with talented Dikla and Mor, from Wix. We gave them an overview of our app, its goals, and the scenario at the beginning of the meeting, and later they assisted us in choosing the correct colour palette and typography, based on their extensive experience. Additionally, they offered suggestions on how to elevate the UX by improving the layers of the screens.

Here are three main conclusions from the meeting we had:

  • After viewing our previous screens, they offer us to combine the elements of our current design with some elements of the old one.

  • It's time to add more edge and playful vibes to the app! They offer us to change the orange tone to pink-red-purple and add confetti or other cheerful graphics to the background, to celebrate the sending completion.

  • We should make the 'Wink' button smaller and move it to the side of the page, As we did four weeks ago.

In next week's iteration we will implement some of the advice.

Technical Side:

This week Dotan’s goal was to upload an image to Firebase Storage from the local phone memory and get the download URL back.

In this process he has managed to create: a splash screen, a main screen, an uploading photo screen, choose the image from the phone images using ActivityResultLauncher, presenting the chosen image on the app page, connected the app to firebase storage but couldn't get the upload to work. Dotan kept getting this exception:

Then he looked all over the internet. Most answers and methods were not relevant because google updated the firebase storage API lately. In addition, he tried to ask people who are familiar with firebase in discord and none of them knew how to help.

In conclusion, we still have a lot of challenging work to do. Stay tuned for an update next Wednesday!
